Origins: The Dark Lion

If you follow me on Facebook, you’ll know recently I’ve been writing up little bio’s about characters in The Negative Man series that are based on friends. However, the one question I get a lot of is always, “who is The Dark Lion Based on?”

Ahh yeah, good old DL – one of the more popular characters in the series. He’s based on someone, but they aren’t with us to enjoy it. So today in a Penalty Box Special, I give you the background info on John Wonderton, aka The Dark Lion.

Name: John Wonderton

Alias: The Dark Lion

Powers: Superhuman reflexes, strength, and durability. In addition to that, he also has exceptional intellect and hand to hand combat skills. He is the perfect super to take on The Negative Man.

Based on: Dale Gill – my uncle. Just like DL, my Uncle Dale was a passionate man when it came to his endeavours. DL’s are crime fighting and my uncle’s was in education. Dale was also larger than life, filling a room with his size and personality. Unfortunately, my uncle passed over ten years ago and never got to read about the character he helped in forming.

So there you have it. I hope whenever Dr. Dale Gill is now, he’s able to see how he’s influenced me and one of the most central characters to The Negative Man mythos. I know he’d be proud.

Before we call it a week, I’m happy to show off the final two covers that my friend Galuh has crafted for the series. I have the Legends Can Die cover, too, but that’ll have to wait a week to be revealed. If you’re in the Orlando area and want to stop by Krum’s World in Winter Garden tomorrow – I’ll be there signing books. Visit to get directions to the store. Those who stop by will get an early look at Legends.

That’s it for this week. I hope everyone has a great weekend and I’ll be back on Thursday for more updates and tales of mischief and mayhem.
